1.若指具体的“监狱”本身，是可数名词；若指在监狱“被监禁”的状态，则为不可数名词，而且不连用冠词：
He goes to the prison sometimes to give lectures. 他有时去监狱给囚犯演讲。
He says he'd rather go to prison than pay the fine. 他说他宁愿蹲监狱也不肯交罚款。
2.汉语说“坐牢”，译成英语可以是be in prison, go to prison等，但绝不能直译为sit in (the) prison。
3. go to prison, be sent to prison等本为终止性动词，但有时可与一段时间连用，指入狱后在监狱所呆的一段时间：
The thief went to prison for six years. 这个窃贼坐了6年的监狱。
He was sent to prison for four years. 他被关进了监狱，服了4年刑。
