汽车“自动启停技术”是在车辆行驶过程中临时停车（例如等红灯）的时候，自动熄火。当需要继续前进的时候，系统自动重启发动机的一套系统。英文名称STOP&START简称STT。STT智能节油系统是一套控制发动机启动和停止的系统。
启停系统的工作原理是，当车辆因为拥堵或者路口停止行进。驾驶员踩下制动踏板，停车摘挡。这时候，Start/Stop系统自动检测：发动机空转且没有挂挡；防锁定系统的车轮转速传感器显示为零；电子电池传感器显示有足够的能量进行下一次启动。满足这三个条件后，发动机自动停止转动。而当信号灯变绿后，驾驶员踩下离合器，随即就可以启动"启动停止器"，并快速地启动发动机。在自动挡车型上，只要一松开刹车，或者转动方向盘，发动机又会马上自动点火，立即又可以踩油门起步，整个过程都处于D档状态。
